Thyme Iced Tea
About this Recipe
Three easy recipes to make thyme tea at home
One of the simple pleasures I have been enjoying this summer is picking thyme from my garden and making iced tea. I love the flavor of thyme and it pairs nicely with other herbs, teas, and even fruit. Thyme is considered a lung tonic and helps bolster immunity and respiratory health.
Thyme Tea with Pineapple Weed
One variation I have made this summer is combining thyme with pineapple weed. Pineapple weed has a fruity fragrance similar to, you guessed it, pineapple, offering a fruity, juicy essence to the overall flavor profile. It’s related to chamomile, so it has a soothing quality as well. I have been purchasing pineapple weed from Willow Wisp farms at the greenmarket this year. Apparently pineapple weed season is over so be sure to bookmark this recipe for next season.
Burberry Thyme Tea
Another variation of thyme tea I have been enjoying this summer is made with the addition of blueberry compote. The blueberry and thyme flavor play well together and feel elevated when serving. I also love the fruity sediment surprise at the bottom of the glass. I personally love it but for people adverse to sediment, be warned.
Ready to make thyme tea at home? You need one large bunch of thyme to begin.
Makes: 1 gallon
Ingredients
- 1 large bunch thyme
- 2 gallons water
- 4 English Breakfast tea bags
- Simple syrup (optional)
Instructions
- Combine 1 large bunch of thyme and 2 gallons of water to a large stock pot. Bring to a boil and reduce to a bare simmer and let gently cook until the water has been reduced by 50%, about 2 hours. Add 4 bags of English breakfast tea and steep for 4 minutes. Remove tea bags and thyme immediately. Allow the mixture to cool until room temperature then add to mason jars or a large pitcher. Store in the refrigerator until cold and ready to serve. Can be served unsweetened or if you prefer a sweeter tea, add simple syrup to each glass to taste.
- Pineapple Weed and Thyme Tea: Make the Thyme Iced Tea recipe as written but add the pineapple weed (pineapple chamomile) as the same time as the thyme.
- Blueberry Thyme Tea: Make the recipe as instructed above. At serving, stir in 2 tablespoons of blueberry compote to each glass and then add simple syrup as needed to your desired sweetness. There will be some blueberry sediment at the bottom of the glass.
